New Secondary School in Aberdeen – Board Advocacy Priority
The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education has now secured the funds on date from the Ministry of Education and Child Care for the purchase of the site for the new secondary school in Aberdeen.
The purchase of the land is in progress and is much needed given that elementary schools have been over-capacity in the southwest sector for the last five years.
The Board has been actively advocating for a new secondary school in Aberdeen and their advocacy has resulted in this funding, which is the first time that the Ministry of Education and Child Care has approved and provided funding for a new school site in this District.
On January 22-23, 2023, when Minister Singh came to Kamloops to visit the Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education, the Board provided Minister Singh with a brief advocating for a new elementary school in Pineview Valley and funding for the site needed for a new secondary school in Aberdeen.
In spring of 2024, the District received a response from the Ministry of Education and Child Care on the District's Annual Five-Year Capital Plan, which included project approval for Major Capital Programs, including the site acquisition for the new secondary school. Securing this land was crucial to support our current and future secondary capacity needs in the southwest of Kamloops.
The Board also has the required School Site Acquisition Charge system in place with the City of Kamloops. As of January 18, 2023, the District has $163,000 in School Site Acquisition Charge funds to contribute to the purchase of the site.
While the site acquisition has been approved, this new secondary school remains a top capital priority due to current and projected enrollment pressures on elementary and secondary schools in the southeast and southwest sectors of Kamloops.
As of February 2024, the average capacity utilization for South Shore secondary schools (Sa-Hali and South Kamloops) is 120%, which is expected to grow to approximately 153% by 2033-2034. Elementary schools in the southwest sector have an average current capacity utilization of 144% which is expected to grow to 182% by 2033-2034. With significant overcapacity of all schools in the area, students in southwest Kamloops will need a secondary school in the next 5 years.
