McQueen Lake Environmental Education Centre
From its inception, the McQueen Lake Environmental Education Centre has been dedicated to providing residential and day programs in environmental education to children, parents, teachers and the public. Since its official opening in 1972, approximately 200,000 visitors have benefited from the programs offered.
The McQueen Lake EEC is 16 kilometres northwest of Kamloops, BC in a wilderness setting near the Lac du Bois Provincial Park and the Isobel Lake Interpretive Forest. The Centre consists of an overnight centre and a day centre nestled amid 640 acres of forest, lakes and grasslands. A series of hiking and cross-country ski trails has been developed to enable interpretive and educational programs to operate safely and efficiently in the area.
Each year, almost 7,000 students and parents visit the McQueen Lake Centre to participate in outdoor and environmental programs. Each program is tailored by the teacher to meet the educational goals of the students, teachers and parents that make up the group. The McQueen Lake Centre provides the opportunity for people to learn about our environment through hands-on experiential activities that are not available in the regular classroom setting.
An active volunteer fundraising society raises funds each year to purchase equipment and to rebuild and repair the 40-year old cabins and structures that make up the camp. Since the rebuilding program began, we have rebuilt or repaired all of the sleeping cabins, constructed a washroom facility, a teaching centre, a gazebo, and a storage barn, and installed a solar electricity system.
